Six Summer Music Festivals in Granada

Published on July 10, 2019 by Susan Walker

Music and Dance in Granada and the Lecrín Valley

Are you a music lover? If you enjoy Jazz, guitar music or Flamenco, I can guarantee you’ll find a festival to suit you in Granada this summer. July and August are particularly busy on the festival front. Not just in the city itself but on the Costa Tropical and in the Lecrín Valley too.

Jazz en la Costa: 15th. to 20th. July

In its 32nd. edition Jazz en la Costa is one of the oldest jazz festivals in Europe, as well as the most important event of its kind on the coast of Andalucía. The concerts take place in Almuñecar, on Granada’s Costa Tropical. Facing towards Africa, the stage in the Parque Botanico el Majuelo sits at the foot of an Arab fortress and next to ancient Phoenician ruins. Just imagine famous jazz musicians playing in the warm Mediterranean evenings, surrounded by exotic plants from all over the globe.

Some of the renowned performers who have left their mark in the festival’s history: Paquito D`Rivera, Danilo Pérez, Rosa Passos, Branford Marsalis, Tete Montoliú, Kenny Barron, Dave Holland, Chano Domínguez or Chucho Valdés.

This year the programme includes: Jazzmeia Horn, Antonio Lizana, José James, Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio, Christian McBride Situation and Jesse Davis.

Concerts are nightly at 22.30h in the Parque Majuelo, Almuñecar. Full details and tickets online here

Late Night Jazz Sessions

After each concert, from 15th. to 20th. July at 00.00 hours, the Costa Jazz Quartet will continue in the mood for late night jazz fans.

Almuñecar is about 40 minutes drive from Restábal. If you have time I strongly recommend taking the longer route marked on the map to drive down. It’s a beautiful route, well worth the detour. Also pretty spectacular, the shorter route on the A44 is the better option for a late night return. For details of how to travel to Granada take a look at our post How to Get to Granada, Spain

III International Guitar Festival Granada: 18th. July to 11th. August

Organised by the European Guitar Foundation, this relatively new festival celebrates its 3rd.. edition dedicated to the memory of Joaquín Rodrigo. The Foundation’s main aim is the diffusion of the Spanish guitar. By finding different ways of reaching new audiences they intend to show the importance of this musical instrument that the rest of the world identifies with Spain.

The extensive programme starts on 18th. July, at 19.30h, with the Fiesta de la Guitarra. Six different, free concerts held in different locations throughout the city of Granada. The first performers being Damon Robinson and Juan Carlos Guadix playing in the Courtyard of the Town Hall. The evening ends with Alberto Lopez, Reyes Martin and Iván Vargas in the Plaza de las Pasiegas in front of Granada’s Cathedral.

From 19th. July, names such as Kiki Morente, Antonio Canales, Pablo Milanés, Margarita Escarpa and the California State University, among others, offer their art in a total of eleven concerts.

III Antonio Marín Montero Guitar Making Competition 2019

It is well known that Granada is one of the main guitar making centres in Spain. More than 50 small workshops continue to make guitars in the traditional manner. Already several foreigners live and make guitars here, so it’s not surprising that this festival also organises a guitar making competition

XVIII Flamenco Festival Lorca and Granada in the Generalife Gardens - 18th. July to 31st. August

A magical event held in the Generalife Gardens Theatre in the Alhambra. This year the theme for Lorca and Granada is “Lorca and Passion. A Sea of Dreams”. Directed by Granada born, cantaora – flamenco singer, Marina Heredía and actress Rosario Pardo, the show reflects on feminine love in Federico Garcia Lorca’s works, especially in The Public, The House of Bernarda Alba, So Let Five Years Pass and Mariana Pineda.

Summer Festivals in the Lecrín Valley

Yes, summertime is festival time in the Lecrín Valley too. First off the annual Flamenco Festival in Restábal. The XII edition of this popular festival is the highlight of the Fiestas in honour of Santa Ana on 26th. July, one of the village’s patron saints. Celebrations usually last 3 or 4 days, including the procession of the saint’s image through the streets and plenty of fun and games for all ages. A typical village fiesta you might like to take part in if you’re in the area.

In the most musical, Lecrín Valley village of Nigüelas, July sees the beginning of the Festina Lente, Musical Fortnights. From 5th. to 13th.  July. Swing and Rock are the themes chosen for this festival.

The Lecrín Valley rocks!

For classical music lovers, the biggest musical event in the Lecrín Valley runs from 28th. July to 11th. August, also in Nigüelas. The FIAPMSE or Southern Europe High Improvement Forum of International Music is co-organised by Concerto Malaga and the Nigüelas Musical Youth. The aim is to bring together international music and young performers as well as fine art activities such as exhibitions, workshops and conferences. Promenade concerts are held in Bodegas Hacienda Señorío de Nevada and the Spa Hotel in Lanjaron. All these venues are within 20 minutes from Restábal.

I think we’re spoilt for choice this summer! It won’t be easy to decide what to see and what to leave out. What do you think?

Meet The Author
Hello everyone, I'm Susan Walker. Until retirement my husband, Frutos and ran toy shops in Ibiza where we have been living for over 50 years. We bought our holiday property, Casa Tagomago in 2005 as a retirement project, landing ourselves with a full restoration to boot....which we thoroughly enjoyed. We designed the house for carefree and comfortable holidays, retaining the village style and traditional building methods. Since 2007 we have welcomed visitors from all over the world. Like us they all love the location, the authentic village life and the proximity to nature. Although we are not in the vicinity, we take our guests comfort and enjoyment very seriously and have an excellent local team to take care of everything. We are very much involved albeit by email, text message, phone or the wonderful WhatsApp. Welcome to Casa Tagomago in Restábal!
