See Robolights One Last Time in Palm Springs

Published on November 27, 2018 by itscolin@mac.com

Now that the Palm Springs weather is turning to what we call "cold", it's time for a little Christmas cheer in the desert. We have our downtown Parade of lights, which is fun for the kids, but one of our best attractions is so bright you can see it from the aerial tramway, or even from an airplane.

I guarantee you have never seen a Christmas display quite like Robolights. Artist Kenny Irwin has been building this installation of recycled art for over 35 years. Every year he adds dozens of new sculptures, so there is always something new to see. You will find Santa Claus and reindeer here, along with thousands of glistening lights, but this is not the usual Candy Cane Lane for the kids. There are some truly bizarre images mixed in among the merriment. Check out the video for a taste of what you have in store.

According to The Desert Sun newspaper, this will be the last year Robolights will be at this location, as the City of Palm Springs has mandated it be moved to a commercial space due to its popularity and size. Who knows what the future holds for Robolights, but it is highly recommended that you see it while you can.

Meet The Author
I was raised in Los Angeles where I worked in music marketing, and then as a massage therapist. In 2005, I moved to Palm Springs, drawn by sunshine, great hiking, and the dream of less traffic. I love music and movies, and I love to travel. Most of my travel involves exploring local culture and a bit of good eating. I’ve found that taking a cooking class while traveling gives me an inside view to how locals really live, and a chance to meet some like-mined fellow tourists. At home I enjoy relaxing with my partner Mark, and I am a slave to my Australian Cattle Dog, Bixby, who never tires of chasing a ball. In 2005, I purchased the condo that would become “Colin’s Palm Springs Getaway”. I spent many months renovating and decorating, and making it the kind of place I would want to stay. It’s truly “rental by owner”, and the only rental I manage, so I am able to keep it nice, offer reasonable rates, and make it a special place for my guests to enjoy their Palm Springs vacation.
