PV Eats - Specialty Market & Restaurant Opens On Kauai's North Shore
We have been waiting a LONG time to see what was going to take the space of the athletic club in the Prince Golf Clubhouse on the north shore of Kauai. The Prince golf course has been closed for several years and the clubhouse has not been open to the public for the same amount of time. When it became clear that work was being done inside the left-hand side of the building, rumors started circulating that there was going to be a coffee shop and market. Finally, after months of anticipation, two weeks ago PV Eats opened.
PV Eats is far more than a coffee shop and market. Yes, it has a coffee and juice bar. And, yes, it has a market. But this venue also offers a full bar and restaurant with a killer view of the Prince Golf Course.
Some friends of ours, visiting the island, told us they stopped by for lunch one day and had a delicious meal. I believe their words were, "the best hamburger I have ever eaten" to be exact. So, the night before they were to leave we decided to all go to PV Eats for dinner. Prior to this, I had not even been inside to check it out.
Five of us arrived at about 6:45 to find an extensive line waiting to be seated. We were told the wait was over an hour. Really? On Kauai? Not to be deterred, we put our name on the list, drove back home for cocktails and pupus, and then, after an hour, headed back to be seated.
The problem is that there are just ten tables total and a few of them are for 2 to 3 people only. There is also a corner coach area and bar where people were also eating.
But, here's the good news. The wait staff was exceedingly cheerful and efficient. They apologized for the long wait and took our orders right away. The menu is limited but there were enough choices to make everyone at our table happy. I had the special, which was fish and chips. The two guys had the penne and my friend and her daughter chose the spaghetti and Japanese eggplant. It was all DELICIOUS! Of course, we had to end our meal with gelato as a reward for waiting so long.
Since that night, I dropped by to talk with the manager. She admitted that, yes, on certain nights they have had way more guests than they expected and so the waits have been long on those nights. Being a new concept for the parent company, Foodland, they are learning as they go. One of the problems is trying to hire enough help. They don't want to expand until they can be sure they can maintain a high quality of food and service. That made sense to me. I am sure that over the course of the next few months, changes will be made. Perhaps even a few more tables will be added for dining!
The interior of the market space is open with isles of unique and interesting items not generally found on Kauai, as well as some specialty local products. There are dry goods, refrigerated items, frozen choices, fresh produce and LOTS of alcohol (a whole wall of whiskey)! The selection of cheeses and deli items is astonishing. I'm not going to lie, the prices are high, even for Kauai standards, but if you are looking for something different, or in a hurry, this might be the place for you to shop.
It is always exciting when something new opens on the north shore of Kauai. Next Saturday a few of my friends are going to meet for coffee and fresh pastries. After that, I must go back to PV Eats to try that hamburger!
