This must be one of the most magical festivals we have ever been to. If you like music and dance I am sure you will feel the same. This year Granada celebrates the 68th. edition of its International Festival of Music and Dance. Held from 21st. June to 12th. July 2019, the festival is a show case for international artists dedicated to classical music, ballet, flamenco and contemporary dance, as well as a Festival for Children. The venues alone are worthy of admiration.

Evening in the Generalife Gardens, the Alhambra Granada. Lecrin Valley villa rental

This was our view whilst sipping a glass of wine before the ballet.

Imagine watching the Mariinsky Theatre Ballet, the Spanish National Ballet or the Martha Graham Dance Company in the open air theatre in the Generalife Gardens. An amazing experience on a moonlit, summer night after sipping a glass of wine at the festival bar overlooking the Alhambra and the Albaicín. Pure romance! Or how about the Sixteen Choir and Orchestra, Maria Joao Pires, the Mahler Chamber Orchestra or the Marriage of Figaro in the patio of the Carlos V Palace? Truly majestic! And some chamber music in the intimate atmosphere of the Patio de los Arrayanes in the centre of the Nasrid Palaces of the Alhambra. A privilege! Not to mention the Masters of the Future concerts to be held in the Corral del Carbon or Roberta and Friends Ensemble in the Patio de los Marmoles in the ancient Hospital Real. Visit the excellent, new festival website to discover all the venues and the full programme here: Festival Granada  Tickets are available now online and bookable directly the page for each performance.

The Carlos V Palace in the Alhambra

The beginnings of the festival date back to 1883 when the patio in the Carlos V Palace was used for symphonic concerts during the celebration of the feast of Corpus Christi. These concerts gave the city its first chance to enjoy a large orchestra playing European music. It moved into XX century with a competition of Cante Jondo (flamenco) organised by Federico García Lorca, Manuel de Falla and other intellectuals and artists such as Andres Segovia, Fernando de los Ríos, Zuloaga o Rusiñol. In 1952 it became the international festival it is today.

The “Fringe” Festival

No, this isn't all! During the festival season there is also a programme of fringe performances and shows in the city of Granada and its province. The FEX is a wonderful mix of charity concerts, solo artists, ensembles playing music from ancient to present day, choirs, dance, flamenco, children's activities and a large etcetera held in squares and patios for everyone to enjoy.

All the Festival venues are easily accessible from Restábal, driving time is around 30 minutes one way.

A festival to be enjoyed at least once in a lifetime. We certainly plan to go again next year. Festival news from Susan at Casa Tagomago

Meet The Author
Hello everyone, I'm Susan Walker. Until retirement my husband, Frutos and ran toy shops in Ibiza where we have been living for over 50 years. We bought our holiday property, Casa Tagomago in 2005 as a retirement project, landing ourselves with a full restoration to boot....which we thoroughly enjoyed. We designed the house for carefree and comfortable holidays, retaining the village style and traditional building methods. Since 2007 we have welcomed visitors from all over the world. Like us they all love the location, the authentic village life and the proximity to nature. Although we are not in the vicinity, we take our guests comfort and enjoyment very seriously and have an excellent local team to take care of everything. We are very much involved albeit by email, text message, phone or the wonderful WhatsApp. Welcome to Casa Tagomago in Restábal!
