Granville – the Monaco of the North

Published on October 1, 2015 by Chris Robinson

A walk around the headland in Granville (known as Le Roc) gives you fantastic sea views to the south across the Bay of Mont Saint-Michel, the port and the beaches. A Gothic church, fine stone mansions, museums, an aquarium, and turreted houses can all be explored in the walled high town. To the north is the beach resort with a tidal seawater swimming pool, beach huts, and exquisite villas.

Below the headland lies the shopping area, a highly regarded sailing school, and the marina with an excellent choice of seafood and fish restaurants. Trips to the islands of Chausey as well as the Channel Islands leave from Granville.

Until 2014 I worked in central London as a marketeer for a membership organization. Years of watching property renovation programmes on TV sparked a dream to do this in France having studied French and worked there previously. I left my job and completed the sale of my house on the same day (a stroke of luck rather than good planning) and headed off to Normandy. I undertook a barn renovation project managing the artisans’ workload. The result is a 3 bedroom gite which I now market all year providing me with endless opportunities to increase my skills and knowledge.
