Clos Montmartre Vineyard

Paris’s only vineyard occupies a patch of sloped hillside near the rue de Salles, just four minutes from Le Trésor de Montmartre.

Close Vineyard is owned and maintained by the city of Paris itself, and all the profits from a yearly auction of 1000 bottles of its light, fruity wine are donated to charity. This auction takes place in October, during the Fête des Vendanges.

According to travel writer Julian Barnes, the quirkiness and surprise of this municipal vineyard is the “counter-icon” to Paris landmarks like the Arc de Triomphe and the Eiffel Tower. In other words, it’s the kind of place you visit because it surprises and delights you, not because the guidebooks told you to.
