Borrow a Bike – for FREE!

Published on July 18, 2017 by Maria Lamb

The first fleet of Healthy
Maine Street free bikes will
roll onto the streets of Machias
this summer. Bikeshare,
a free bike sharing program
unique to Washington County,
is one of several initiatives
being undertaken by the Town
of Machias Revitalization
Committee, Healthy Acadia and
community partners in an effort
to achieve a healthier, cleaner
and greener community.
The Bikeshare, Bike program
relies on donations of gently used
bicycles, which are maintained
and repaired by a network of
local volunteers. Thanks to
the generosity and support
of community members, the
Bikeshare Bike fleet now has
bikes available in a variety of
sizes, creating a town-wide bikesharing
network. Healthy Maine
Machias Bike lending program offers a free ride around town

Street Bikeshare Bikes will
be available to borrow for use
throughout greater downtown
Machias.
Reservations, while not
essential, are recommended and
can be made by email or in person
at a Healthy Maine Street FREE
Bikes site. Email reservation
requests to Angela Fochesato
at angela@healthyacadia.org;
please include, “bike share
reservations” in the subject line
of your email.
To borrow a Healthy Maine
Street Bikeshare Bike, please
bring your valid ID – a current
driver’s license, passport or state/
country proof of age card – to
one of the following reservation
sites during operating hours: the Machias Bay Chamber
of Commerce and Axiom
Technologies, both located in
Machias.
Take note that st udent
identification cards, Medicare
cards, credit cards, cash or any
documents other than the abovementioned
cannot be accepted.
Children may also make use of
the bike-sharing program when
accompanied by an adult with a
valid ID. Your ID will be held as
a deposit for the duration of the
reservation and will be returned
to you when you return your
Healthy Maine Street Bikeshare
Bike to the same location from
which you borrowed it.
For groups reserving multiple
bikes, and/or to reserve the
bicycles overnight or for an
extended period of time, please
contact Angela at angela@ healthyacadia.org, please
include, “multi-day-“ or “multibike
reservations” in the subject
line of your email, or call 207-
255-3741.
Although those 18 years of
age and older are not currently
required by Maine law to ride
with a helmet, Healthy Maine
Street requires all users to
wear bicycle safety helmets,
regardless of age. Lending
stations will issue each rider
an appropriately sized safety
helmet, as well as a bike lock,
upon bicycle pickup. Bikeshare
Bike users can shop, sightsee,
or stop for lunch, confident that
their loaner bike will be where
they left it when they return.
For questions or additional
information about the Healthy
Maine Street Bikeshare Bike
sharing program, or how to
start a similar program in your
community, contact Angela
Fochesato at 255-3741 or email
angela@healthyacadia.org or
office@bikesa.asn.au.

Meet The Author
Maria received degrees in both business and psychology and had worked as both a travel professional and a real estate agent when she realized that she could combine both of her passions — travel and residential real estate and design. Managing vacation rental properties since 2003, she has spent countless hours obsessively networking with other vacation rental professionals. Her love for residential architecture and beautiful landscapes has led Maria to collect houses around the globe, including one purchased sight unseen on the Bay of Fundy in Canada. She’s also been lucky to live in some really cool locales – an 18th century carriage house on Beacon Hill in Boston, a medieval castle in Europe, several resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico, and a historic Spanish-eclectic Pacific view home in southern California. Maria currently divides her time between an artsy farmhouse in Machiasport, Maine, a quintessential cape house on Cape Cod and a beach cottage in tiny Phinney Cove, Nova Scotia. Oh, and her, oh-so-chaotic, home life consists of a musician hubby, two teenagers, four cats, two dogs and a diaper-wearing house-chicken.
