Autumn Festivals in Wells, Somerset

Published on July 30, 2019 by Griff

Somerset is home to an amazingly wide selection of festivals. These range across art, media, literature, live comedy, food and film. The magnificent historic city of Wells is host to a number of these. I particularly want to draw your attention to two outstanding autumn festivals; the Wells Food Festival and the Wells Festival of Literature

The Wells Food Festival - Sunday 13th October 2019

On Sunday 13 October 2019, Wells is set to be the centre of all things foodie. The seventh annual Food Festival returns to celebrate the best of Somerset’s wonderful local produce from over 150 of the area’s best artisan producers. The Festival is billed as"a celebration of Somerset's rich culinary heritage" and "one of the prettiest food festivals in England". It is is free to enter. Graze your way round the Artisan Producers Stalls which extend from the Market Square, along the Bishop's Palace Moat and into the Recreation Ground.

The Wells Festival of Literature  18-26 October 2019

Wells Festival of Literature was set up in 1992. It aims to promote the enjoyment of books and to encourage a love of the written word. The Festival brings to Wells a wide range of international, national and local writers to entertain, challenge, inspire and inform audiences of all ages and tastes. The Festival  is funded by ticket sales, competition entries and generous local sponsors.

This year will feature an event quite unlike anything the Festival has ever staged before. The legendary Liverpool poet Roger McGough will join forces with a trio of musicians known as LiTTLe MACHiNe. This fantastic finale will consist of a magnificent selection of poems set to music on an evening that promises to break previous Festival records! On every day the Festival promises a much-loved array of topics and speakers who guarantee to inform, entertain and even, occasionally, annoy!

Find out who these will be in the full programme at the Festival of Literature website

My wife Susan and I manage our only holiday cottage, Beanacre Barn which is located in the village of Binegar in the Mendip Hills, five mile north of the small historic cathedral city of Wells in Somerset, England. We moved her in 2002 to live in the old 17th Century farm house and converted one of the barns into this lovely 4 Star holiday cottage. Designed for two it combines traditional features and comfort with modern equipment and facilities. We have developed the secluded walled garden to be a particular feature which is exclusively for our guests in the Barn. We look forward to welcoming you!
