A Little Bit Of History on Cozumel

Published on September 6, 2019 by skeeterseatery

Home to Mexicans and expats, Cozumel island also attracts thousands of tourists every year. This migration is an electrifying sight. But what leads to Cozumel being the famous Island it is today? Let us take you through the memoirs of Cozumel’s unique history.

Rich and distinct, the history of Cozumel dates back to the earliest days of habitation in 300 BC by the Yucatan Maya. Using the island to the best of its potential, the Mayas used it for sea trading. The rich heritage and the old temples that one gets to witness around Cozumel is a by-product of the Mayas’ hard work. Surprisingly, the various Spanish conquerors that came into Cozumel were not met by extreme anguish and hatred of the Mayas. However, much to our dismay, the British conquerors tried to settle in Cozumel. These settlers settled in Cozumel for an aim that of sending back log woods from Cozumel to Europe.

Contrasting to popular belief Cozumel was not a stronghold of pirates but was attacked by them quite a lot of times. Fast-forward, one could picture Cozumel in the 1700s as a land of a few, embarked by a low population.  We dare you to believe us, Cozumel is considered a people-fetching and a precious treasure of the world. With almost 30 different types of coral reefs, this island has given life to not only a million marine species but also provides a way of life to many people from all over the world.

When you are on the island of Cozumel, do not forget to visit the different cultural sites there. Feel the essence of the historic significance of Cozumel in each and every site that you happen to witness. Despite modernity and the complexities that evolve, locations such as this one depict a hint of their history in everything.

On a vacation trip to Cozumel in 2008, we immediately knew we had to move! It was a time in our lives to listen to that little voice in our heads. We regrouped to lead a saner life. What’s not to love about a Mexican casa with a tropical garden and a cooling pool? Building our second vacation rental, we furiously went about renovations inside and out to create an oasis our guests could enjoy. We really focused on what we wanted as renters. We now love sharing our newest villa with others here in Cozumel. We work in the background with the guests providing an island escape. Silvia has extensive knowledge of the travel and resort industry from her time spent with Vista Del Mar Boutique Hotel, Cozumel Bar Hop tours, Odyssey Tours, and Royal Holiday Club. My background as the former owner of a restaurant helps me offer outstanding customer service to ensure your vacation dreams are reached. That little voice has never left us. By listening to our clients, we work to improve their vacation experience.
