Places For Snorkeling in Exuma
A great place for snorkeling in Exuma is between two of the offshore islands that surround Elizabeth Harbour. To get there you may either rent a boat from Minns Water Sports or sign up for a trip with Exuma Dive.
Your destination is between the islands of Guana Cay and Fowl Cay. Choose a calm day as the location is exposed to the Ocean, and take one of the several mooring bouys. The area extends about quarter of a mile square and depths vary. From around 6 to 9 feet in most place but as you swim further out the bottom shelves and depth reduces down to 18 inches. You should see a large amount of colorful coral and various types of fish, conch and turtles.
An alternative spot for snorkeling in Exuma is in the middle of the harbour where the green and red floating bouys mark the boat channel. Here you can anchor in six feet of water and explore the coral heads.
If you are in an area where there is a rocky shore it is well worth snorkeling along the overhang where many smaller fish make their home. The only danger you might encounter are Lion Fish. These spectacular fish are very colorful and covered with spines. These spines contain are very painful toxin which they use for defensive purposes. Steer clear of them.
Another popular location for snorkeling in Exuma is above the blue hole off Stocking Island. Here the area is small but the fish are plentiful. But do not even consider diving down, stay on the surface. The reason being that the blue hole leads to a cave system that extends out to the Ocean and the tidal pull is strong and therefore live threatening, so stay on the surface.
